چکیده

Previous studies have shown that the metabolism of acetone and acetate by the photosynthetic bacterium, Rhodopseudomonas gelatinosa, requires either light or oxygen as a source of energy (1, 2). The studies also showed that the cleavage of acetoacetate to acetat.e did not require an external source of energy. These observations are consistent with the known thermodynamic properties of the reactions which indicate that the cleavage of acetoacetate is an exergonic reaction. In view of current concepts of acetoacetate metabolism (3), it seemed possible that some of the energy liberated by this reaction could be utilized to satisfy part of the energy requirements for the metabolism of acetone and acetate. The coupling of acetone and acetate metabolism with acetoacetate decomposition, anaerobically in the dark, was investigated by means of C14-labeled acetone and acetate. The results indicate that the hydrolysis of acetoacetate can serve as a source of energy for these reactions. The coupling between acetoacetate decomposition and acetate metabolism was much more efficient than the coupling with acetone metabolism.

The photosynthetic metabolism of acetone by Rhodopseudomonas gelatinosa.

acetol was an intermediate in the metabolism of acetone by an unidentified soil diphtheroid. Because of the divergence of these results from those previously reported for R. gelatinosa, the photosynthetic metaboljsm of acetone was reinvestigated by means of a more direct approach. In addition to the two pathways indicated above, a third variation is postulated in which cleavage of acetone to CZ...

Phototrophic Growth of Rhodopseudomonas gelatinosa on Citrate; Accumulation and Subsequent Utilization of Cleavage Products

Rhodopseudomonas gelatinosa grows on citrate anaerobically in the light. Under aerobic conditions citrate cannot be utilized. Citrate is rapidly fermented by Rps. gelatinosa in the dark, and this fermentation is associated with limited growth (one generation). Anaerobically in the light citrate is decomposed much faster than its catabolic products can be used for the synthesis of cellular mater...

Control of porphyrin biosynthesis in Rhodopseudomonas spheroides and Propionibacterium shermanii. A direct 13C nuclear-magnetic-resonance spectroscopy study.

The facultative anaerobes Rhodopseudomonas spheroides and Propionibacterium shermanii were grown under anaerobic and aerobic conditions. The effect of light was studied with the photosynthetic R. spheroides, and the adaptation of both species to dark anaerobic life was monitored by direct observation of 5-amino[5-13C]laevulinic acid metabolism by using 13C nuclear-magnetic-resonance spectroscopy.

Primary structure of a high potential iron-sulfur protein from the purple non-sulfur photosynthetic bacterium Rhodopseudomonas gelatinosa.

The third amino acid sequence of a high potential iron-sulfur protein, that of the non-sulfur purple photosynthetic bacterium Rhodopseudomonas gelatinosa, has been determined. It consists of a single polypeptide chain of 74 amino acid residues, which is slightly smaller than the high potential iron-sulfur proteins from the sulfur purple bacteria Chromatium vinosum (85 residues) and Thiocapsa pf...
